“Creature Comforts” is a menagerie of found object sculptures created as I was picking up the pieces of my broken heart after losing both my parents. I literally began picking up branches and twigs, brambles and stones, seeds and bones–whatever looked soulful–on walks along country roads near my Sebastopol studio. Every feral fragment, carefully handled and reconstructed, reminds me of the fragility of life and force of nature. And while on daily road walks during COVID, I played with the idea of making masks from the multitude of discarded debris that I gathered. I saw unusual faces hiding in plain sight. This was the beginning of my “Mad Masks” series.
