With the San Francisco Fort Mason Printmakers, I learned many techniques including etching, aquatint, drypoint, mezzotint, sugarlift, and photo transfer. These methods involve designing and creating the printing plate and then making exact copies for an edition. I realized this was too tedious for my temperament, so I chose to concentrate on monotype, a one-of-a-kind process with endless possibilities. An image is applied directly in ink on the plate, using rollers, brushes, stencils, found objects, and even fingers. A surprise comes with each print! Rather than cleaning the plate after printing, I reuse the leftover “ghost” to inspire the character and direction of the next image. Each unique print is part of an evolutionary process, connected to the images before and after, with a sense of family, history, and lineage—prevailing themes in my work.
